Jun 17, 2019 @ 3:05am. The story in bl1 is quite basic but it's a good idea to play through it (and the general knoxx dlc) once to learn about the world and the characters. This will make the (much better) stories of bl2, bl:tps, and tales from the borderlands x10 times more interesting and engaging. There are plenty of moments in 2 that have more impact and meaning having played 1 first.
Do you have to play borderlands 1? I believe you can skip this. Due to the fact that borderlands 2 has a year before borderlands: I would recommend playing the first game for at least one detailed playthrough, partly because you'll appreciate bl2 more, but also because if you play bl2 first then bl1 will get spoiled a bit. But you don't want to play the first then it's not very necessary. If you care at all about the story in 2. It's certainly a fun game, and you'll get a better perspective of 2 having played 1 first. That said, a lot of the mechanics are upgraded immensely in bl2 to the point where you likely won't want to go back once you've started. I never played borderlands, and vaguely remember the story of borderlands 2.
